The official follow-up to Kanye West’s tenth studio album, Donda, which was released in August 2021, is called DONDA2. As Kanye announced his departure from Def Jam, the album would also be his first to be released independently.

On January 3, 2022, it was claimed that Steven Victor said that Ye was working on the album, sparking the first rumors about the album’s existence.

Kanye formally revealed the album’s February 22 release date and Future’s appointment as executive producer on January 27, 2022.

Later on same day, Ye posted a section from an article from Bustle that outlined the significance of the date:

According to the stars, the United States is finally getting a spiritual makeover with its first-ever Pluto Return on Feb. 22, 2022. Astrologically, a Pluto return is when the heavenly body returns to the same position in a birth chart where it was when the chart began.

On February 7, 2022, it was later made public that Ye had had a private record listening party in Los Angeles at Nobu with well-known musicians like Drake, Travis Scott, and Yung Lean.

Due to Kid Cudi’s relationship with Kim Kardashian’s boyfriend, Pete Davidson, Ye decided to omit him from a feature on the album on February 12, 2022. Ye announced this decision on Instagram. Ye announced an album listening party at the Miami venue LoanDepot Park later that day.

Ye revealed on his Instagram on February 17, 2022, that the album would not be made available on popular streaming services but would instead be made available only on the Stem Player platform, a music device that Ye had developed in collaboration with KANO. Donda’s deluxe edition was first only available on the device before being made available on all major platforms.

Ye uploaded the first official tracklist for the album the following day. It contained 22 songs and included the caption, “Like we usually do at this time,” which was taken from his 2007 song “Good Life.” After making this post, he published a second tracklist with “City of Gods” listed as the album’s final track.

Ye presided over the DONDA LIVE EXPERIENCE on February 22 in Miami. The majority of the music on the record were played during the first half of the show. It featured artists like Soulja Boy, Jack Harlow, Migos, and the late XXXTentacion. However, certain songs from the tracklist weren’t played, and half of the ones that were previews sounded obviously incomplete with garbled verses.

Only four of the album’s tracks were made available on Ye’s Stem Player on February 23. Security, Pablo, Broken Road, and We Did It Kid are among them.
